Fall Track Registration information
Thursday, May 13, 2010
Track Parents (Future Cross Country Parents): St. Anne will begin the Fall Sports registration process during track season, but the note below lets you know the dates for all fall sports signups as well. I hope your kids will join the Cross Country team and bring a few friends. We officially accept 4th-8th graders, but have had a few 2nd and 3rd graders join us as a part of the running club. Coach Bob VanDeVelde and I have set a goal of 30+ kids, but most importantly is that we have a strong standing in the league. The cost is $100 for in parish/school and $125 for out of parish participants.

The Varsity event for CC is a 3K or 2 mile. The JV event is a 2K or 1.2 mile. We can send as many kids out to run in each event, but the first 5 from each team score the team points. We practice as a team and go to local parks (Eckstein, Halmich, Delia, Civic Center, WCC, or Dodge Park, Metro Beach or Stoney Creek) to do our running. We play running games and sometimes run to 7-11 for Slurpees or for ice cream. Bob and I either run or bike along side the kids so they are well supervised. We have had several parents and/or siblings who are avid runners join our practice sessions as well. Last year our kids participated in the Warren Mott Alumni Challenge 5K, the Peach Festival 5K, the Roseville Big Bird 4K, the Hanson Running Store Festival of Lights 4 mile, and the Belle Isle New Years Eve 4 Mile. Many of our kids took age-group awards and each earned the cool shirts that are customary to running and racing.

Our season officially begins in mid-August and goes through mid-October. Most meets are on Saturday mornings, but some were moved to week nights due to festival and holidays. Double sporting is allowed during CC and track season, so if your child plays football, soccer, cheer, volleyball, or golf he/she can run CC if their schedule and/or grades permit.

Please help us create a strong CC team for St. Anne. If you should have any questions please feel free to contact Coach Sandy Buchanan at sandybuchanan@sbcglobal.net or call her cell phone 586-925-0597.

Spring 2010 Track Information
Monday, January 18, 2010
Important Track Docs
Zero Tollerance - Mandatory
Track Emergency Form - Mandatory
Track99 Track Shirts - Optional
Track begins on Monday March 15. We practice M-F from 4-6pm, meeting in the cafeteria as a team at the beginning and end. Our practice site is the WCC across the street. Kids will change clothing and bring their bags to the cafeteria and leave them there during our practice. We have a large team (60-80 from 5 schools) so I clear the changing areas with Mr. Sahadi and the teachers before March 15. 4th is escorted to the cafe bathrooms by me daily to change clothes. 5th & 6th change in their upstairs bathrooms and come to the cafe. 7th changes in the locker rooms above the gym and either leaves their stuff there or brings it down to the cafe. 8th changes in the cafe bathrooms and brings their stuff out to the cafe. Please ensure your daughter is dressed for the weather, has good running shoes, and has a beverage everyday. Practices are open and parents may workout with us or watch from the sidelines. I do not as a rule cancel practice. We have plyometric and aerobic video workouts and training films that we use on rainy days.

We have 12 events and train and time the kids in all of them (High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m 1600m, 3200m (sometimes), 4x100, 4x200, 4x400, 4x800). After 3 weeks we have a one-on-one talk with them to settle on where they naturally fit or can most likely help the team score. Younger kids 4th-6th are expected to try all events and not specialize. The first heat of any event is varsity. My staff and I sit down weekly and assess who is varsity for that meet. Any child can make varsity if he/she is of that caliber. We challenge the kids to move up and improve.

Our meets can be during the week, generally 5:30-8:30pm. Our meets can also be on weekends, generally in the morning and last up to 3 hours. We go to several tournaments, which last all day. My expectation is that kids stay for the whole meet so we can celebrate as a team or share a loss as a team. We host most of our meets at the WCC. We require parents to help out with gates, concessions, 50/50, raking, measuring, timing, etc.

We have a coaching staff of 8 and all are well qualified to coach and mentor your child. If you need to speak with me my numbers are home 586-573-2523 and cell 586-925-0597. I look forward to meeting you and your daughter.
